Top U.S. officials visiting China said Thursday the nation is taking "unprecedented action" to address global warming and reduce its energy intensity.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke are visiting the Asian nation in an effort to advance cooperation on addressing climate change.
Cooperation between China and the U.S., which are responsible for roughly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, is crucial, if international negotiations for a climate change treaty are to succeed.
Earlier in the week, the two countries announced a $15 million joint research project aimed at creating more energy-efficient vehicles and buildings and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from burning coal.
U.S. President Barack Obama will visit China later this year for a summit meeting with President Hu Jintao.
