U.K. To Unveil Low-Carbon Transition Plan

The United Kingdom, which is known for zealous attention to league tables for its favorite sport of football, will now employ a similar system for ranking the environmental performace of domestic companies.

The European Commission approved on Tuesday a British scheme that will disperse subsidies to businesses in non-energy intensive sectors, based on such rankings.

Under the Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme, companies not already included under the European Union trading sytsem will have to purchase emission allowances sold at auction. The revenues generated will be paid back to participants with those at the top of the league table receiving the biggest sums.

The British government is working to find new methods of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and has set a 2020 target of cutting emissions by 34% compared to 1990 levels.

On Wednesday the government is expected to publish a detailed plan for achieving the reductions and acquiring 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

According to reports, the plan will include feed-in tariffs and additional support for offshore wind farms.
