As global populations expand, water supplies are becoming a serious concern.
A new report published in the journal Nature Geoscience asserts that the planet does not have any less water than in the past, but that the water is moving.
The study focuses particularly on the Earth’s most prominent rain band, near the equator, which researchers say is moving northward at a rate of about a mile a year, due to warming temperatures.
If the trend continues, Pacific islands near the equator that rely on heavy rainfall for freshwater, could be parched by the end of the century, according to the study.
