Toda Kogyo Plans U.S. Manufacturing Plant

Toda America, Inc., a unit of Japan’s Toda Kogyo Corp.(TDAKF.PK), last week announced plans to build a U.S.-based
manufacturing plant to support lithium-ion battery cell production, if the company wins a
Department of Energy grant under the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component
Manufacturing Initiative awarded in late July.

The company did not announce a location for the proposed plant.

In 2008, Toda Kogyo Corp. and the U.S.
Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory reached a world-wide licensing agreement for the
commercial production and sales of Argonne’s patented composite cathode materials for lithium-ion
batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are a core component of the U.S. strategy for the electrification of automobiles. Toda Kogyo Corporation would produce and supply the advanced materials for battery production.

“The localization of the supply base is a key step in the development of a sustainable Li-ion battery
industry for hybrid and electric vehicles in the United States. Toda America Inc. is a key partner for our
present hybrid production programs and we look forward to working with them in the United States to
support our technology and market growth plan.” MaryAnn Wright, CEO Johnson Controls-SAFT.

Johnson Controls-SAFT plans to build a facility for the manufacture and assembly of Li-ion batteries in
Holland, Michigan intended to produce up to 15 million Li-ion battery cells for automotive applications
by the year 2012.

“A manufacturing presence in the U.S. is a strategic step in our quest to maintain our global leadership
as the premier supply chain partner to both battery OEMs and automobile manufacturers around the
world” said Toshiyuki Toda, President, Toda Kogyo Corporation.
