Samsung Unveils $4.3B Eco-Management Plan

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) plans to invest 5.4 trillion Korean won (US$4.3 billion) to develop new energy-efficient products and reduce carbon emissions from its manufacturing facilities, according to the company’s Eco-Management 2013 plan, released last week.

The company said it will spend about $2.5 billion developing more energy-efficient, eco-friendly products such as TVs, cell phones and refrigerators.

The plan calls for 100% of Samsung’s products to exceed Good Eco-Product criteria,
up from the current 50%. This will include introducing
eco-friendly evaluation for products in the R&D stage and increasing the use of recyclable and
eco-friendly materials, the company said.

The company also said it aims to reduce the standby power consumption of many of its products from 1 watt to half a watt.

The Eco-Management 2013 plan also commits the company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing facilities. Samsung said it will spend about $1.8 billion to cut emissions 50% and reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions from its products by 84 million tons over the five year period.

The plan also calls for increased environmental cooperation with suppliers and partners, including supporting the implementation of green management systems such as ISO 14001, and the establishment of greenhouse gas inventories.
