In the year since San Francisco launched its solar incentive program, applications for solar installations have increased 450%, according to a statement by mayor Gavin Newsom on Cleantechnica.
"By any measure, our solar energy incentive program has been a stellar success after just one year," Newsom said.
Under the program residents can receive from $3,000 to $6,000, in addition to federal incentives, for new solar power installations, and businesses can receive up to $10,000. Residents or businesses choosing local installers for their systems will receive higher levels of funding.
GoSolarSF has seen applications rise from 200 before the program began to 850. In addition, Newsom said 56 applicants met low-income standards and will receive additional incentive payments.
San Francisco and renewable energy developer Recurrent Energy recently announced plans to deploy large-scale solar on the city’s Sunset Reservoir.
A report issued this week by Environment California ranks San Francisco third in California, just behind much larger (and sunnier) Los Angeles and San Diego, in number of rooftop solar installations in California. On a per-capita basis, San Francisco leads the state’s large cities for rooftop solar.
And in related news, the city last month became the first in the nation to establish a mandatory composting law.
"If we continue making smart investments guided by the right priorities, imagine what we can do for our economy and our environment this year and in years to come," Newsom said.
