EPA Releases List of Potentially Dangerous Coal Ash Sites

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Monday made public the list of 44 coal ash sites considered to be potentially dangerous to surrounding communities.

Previously the Army Corps of Engineers said it wanted to keep the locations of the vulnerable sites secret for national security reasons.

In making the announcement, the EPA said the threat posed by these sites was not the condition of dams holding back coal ash retaining ponds, but rather their locations adjacent to communities.

The EPA has so far inspected half of the sites on the list.

North Carolina has the most sites–a dozen–and the largest concentration is near Cochise, Arizona, where there are seven storage ponds.

In February, a suit was filed against the Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE: TVE) for the December 22, 2008 coal ash spill in Roane County, Tennessee.
