Eastern U.S. Could Benefit from High-Altitude Wind Power

Like massive rivers that can be harnessed for hydropower, jetstreams miles above the earth’s surface offer the most consistent and powerful winds on the planet. Capturing this renewable energy is technologically challenging–to say the least. But researchers and start-ups think systems may be commercially viable in a decade.

A recent study published in the journ Energies, shows where high-altitute wind power could be used most effectively.

Researchers at California State University, Chico studied historical data to conduct the first global assessment of high-altitude wind power and found that population centers in the eastern United States and East Asia will be most likely to benefit, if and when this renewable energy is developed.
