A group of cement companies representing roughly a third of the industry have proposed a strategy for cutting their greenhouse gas emissions.
Globally the industry is responsible for 5% of carbon dioxide emissions, and emissions are expected to grow in coming decades with continued urbanization in developing nations.
The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) has suggested a system for monitoring, reporting and verifying emissions that it says could cut emissions by as much as 25%.
The group said the system would work well with the sectoral approach for emissions reductions being considered in United Nations-led talks for a climate change treaty.
