Sunovia, EPIR Receive $9M Defense Contract

Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: SUNV) and EPIR Technologies, Inc. announced the receipt of a $9 million Defense Department SBIR Phase III contract to expand their solar production capacities for cadmium telluride on silicon (CdTe/Si).

The Partners say they are the only companies in the solar energy business that are capable of growing single-crystal, high-quality CdTe/Si wafers.

The growth of CdTe/Si was pioneered by Dr. Siva Sivananthan of EPIR for applications in the infrared imaging industry.

The technology is now being adapted for the solar markets, and the companies said they are ahead of schedule in delivering solar cells that can be produced at about one-fifth the cost of today’s high-efficiency solar cells.

The Partners are currently under contract to install 20 MW of solar energy at the Cibernetique Parque in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

In February 2008 the two companies swapped 10% equity ownership in a deal to solidify their partnership. In May 2008, they announced $12 million in funding.
