DOE Needs Restructuring – Editorial

The U.S. Department of Energy is too weighed down by nuclear energy programs to devote itself to bringing about a clean energy revolution, according to New York Times Op-Ed columnist Stephanie Cooke.

Approximately two-thirds of the Department’s annual budget is spent managing the thousands of facilities that were involved in producing nuclear weapons during the cold war.

This is not surprising, Cooke writes, considering the DOE is essentially an offshoot of the Atomic Energy Commission, which was established in 1946 to continue the work of the Manhattan Project.

Cooke states that a reorganization of the Department is necessary to relieve it of burdensome Cold War duties, so that it can get on with the business of creating a new energy future for the country.
