NYC Gets Tough on Idling Trucks

New York City is cracking down on idling trucks in an effort to improve air quality–particularly around city schools.

A new measure signed into law this month cuts from three minutes to one minute the allowed idling time around schools.

The city has had idling restrictions in place for decades, but they are rarely enforced. The new measure is also meant to improve enforcement and raise public awareness of the issue.

A new report by the Environmental Defense Fund estimates that idling cars and trucks produce 130,000 tons of heat-trapping carbon dioxide each year in New York City. The group believes the one-minute idling limit next to schools is the toughest such law in the United States.

There is no federal anti-idling law, but according to an Associated Press report, about 30 states and dozens of municipalities have their own measure.
