The State of California rejected a plan backed by environmentalists
that would have expanded oil drilling off the state’s coast for the
first time in 40 years.
The plan was the result of an alliance
between longtime anti-oil environmentalists and Houston-based Plains
Exploration & Production Co.
Environmental groups
reportedly signed a confidential agreement to support increased
drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel in exchange for a promise to end
local drilling by 2022.
However, the State Lands Commission
voted against the request, objecting to the confidential nature of the
agreement and stating that there was no guarantee the company would
halt drilling.
