Police Looking For Fuel Efficiency

Some law enforcement agencies are beginning to replace big-engine cruisers with four-cylinder vehicles and hybrids. They may not be as fit for high-speed chases but the thinking is that slow law enforcement is better than no law enforcement, if and when gasoline gets back into the $4 range.

The Associated Press reports that Salt Lake City police recently added five 2009 Toyota Camry hybrids to their fleet, and Gulf Breeze Florida has applied for a state grant to put electric motors in three Crown Victoria cruisers.

Atlanta-based Carbon Motors Corp. has designed a twin-turbo diesel for police work. The company said it uses 40% less fuel than the massive Crown Victorias.
