NY Could Pass Bigger, Better Recyling Law

New York may take a groundbreaking step this year to increase recycling, according to Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis.

During a visit to the State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry on Wednesday he said the "Bigger Better Bottle Bill" has a good chance for becoming state law this year.

The bill, which was rejected by Senate Republicans in 2008, calls for a nickel deposit on non-carbonated beverage containers, such as juice and iced-tea bottles, in an effort to increase recycling levels.

The bill would also significantly increase revenue for the state. Under the bill, uncollected deposits would be routed to the state Environmental Protection Fund, instead of being kept by bottlers.

State officials estimate the fund could accumulate $119 million a year.
