Now that the Bush administration is out of office, pressure is increasing on the United States to take action to address global warming.
On Tuesday, European Union environment commissioner, Stavros Dimas, sent an open letter to Barack Obama. In it he wrote that developing countries “cannot see why they should decarbonise their own economies if the world’s richest economy does not also make firm commitments.”
So far the European Union has been at the forefront of efforts by developed nations to reduce carbon emissions, but they need the cooperation of the United States to encourage other countries to commit to post-Kyoto goals.
