VCs Optimistic About Carbon Market

U.S. venture capitalists say they see a potential trillion-dollar carbon market that could result from new regulations to combat global climate change, according to a Reuters report.

The market could prove to be a growth engine in a struggling global economic environment. However, traditional green industries like solar and wind are less likely to benefit from the new market as much as companies that allow for infrastructure development, such as smart grids, one analyst said.

There’s still a lot of optimism and a lot of growth in and around the carbon market at all levels: the trading level, at the project level and at the company level," Martin Whittaker of Mission Point Capital Partners said.

If president-elect Barack Obama follows through with his promise to create a U.S. carbon cap-and-trade system, global emissions trading will be well on its way to reaching it’s full potential.
