Portland, Oregon has offered Denmark-based Vestas Wind Systems (VWS.CO) $12.5 million in cash incentives to consolidate its North American headquarters in the city, according to reports. Vestas is the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer.
The corporate incentive package is the largest ever offered by the city.
Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and Portland Mayor-elect Sam Adams are hoping the company will build a $250 million, 500,000-square-feet headquarters facility and add roughly 850 wind jobs to the community.
The Associated Press reported yesterday that Vestas is planning to expand its Portland headquarters, which already employs about 350 employees. But Adams insisted that the deal remains non-binding and is not complete.
He said confirming the deal would be one of his top priority’s when he takes office in January.
"I want Portland to be the greenest city on Earth," he said.
Vestas Americas senior vice president Roby Roberts said the company would like to break ground on the Portland expansion by the end of 2009–if the deal goes through.
In August, Vestas announced plans to build a new blade factory and a nacelle assembly factory in Brighton, Colorado.
