President-elect Barack Obama has selected two more scientists, who have been strong advocates for addressing climate change, to serve in the top ranks of his administration, according to a Washington Post story.
The appointments of Harvard University physicist John Holdren as presidential science adviser and Oregon State University marine biologist Jane Lubchenco as head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are expected to be annonced tomorrow.
Like Energy Secretary-designate Steven Chu, both Holdren and Lubchenco support imposing limits on greenhouse gases to avoid the worst effects of global warming.
The appointments send yet another message that the Obama administration will value the opinions of the scientific community–a choice that is distinctly different from the Bush administration, which has repeatedly gone against the advice of scientists working within the nation’s federal agencies and universities.
"The Bush administration has been the most remarkably anti-science administration that I’ve seen in my adult lifetime," Nobel laureate David Baltimore, former president of the California Institute of Technology, said in an interview. "And I do think that there will be a sea change in the Obama administration with the respect shown for the findings of science as well as the process of science."

I applaud Obama’s use of scientists to the administration. However, he has also made some questionable picks. My hope is that he is not just playing politics and really will focus his administration on a sustainable agenda.
