German researchers are making a bioplastic out of waste material resulting from the paper-making process, according to an MSNBC.com report.
The material, called Arboform, is also referred to as liquid wood. It contains lignin–tons of which are discarded by the paper industry–and can be mold injected like plastic.
A company named Tecnaro is perfecting techniques for working with the material, which so far has been used to make loudspeaker boxes, car parts, golf tees and ballpoint pens.
The material might soon be used to replace plastics in toys, which are coming under greater scrutiny for potential toxic dangers.
