Environmental protestors shut down traffic on a runway at Britain’s Stansted Airport yesterday, chaining themselves together on the tarmac to demonstrate their opposition to a proposed second runway at the airport.
More than 50 flights were cancelled yesterday at the nation’s third-largest airport and 57 people were arrested according to the police.
The group, called Plane Stupid said more protests would take place if a third runway is approved for Britain’s Heathrow Airport. Reportedly, the group is opposed to the increased greenhouse gas emissions that will result from expansions a the nation’s largest airports.
This is not the first protest/publicity stunt by the group. In July, a member tried to glue himself to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at an awards ceremony, according to the Associated Press.
In September, former U.S. vice president Al Gore urged young people to engage in civil disobedience to halt the construction of new coal-fired plants. So far, no such protests in the U.S. have been reported on a national level.
