Starting January 1, 2009, Oregonians will be able to recycle their old TVs, as well as desktop computers, portable computers and monitors, for free through the “Oregon E-Cycles” Program.
Oregon is one of 17 states that now have laws on electronics collection and recycling.
The program will provide free electronics recycling in every county, including at least one collection site in every city with a population of 10,000 or more.
TVs and other consumer electronics contain materials that can be used again. But just as importantly, they also contain toxic components, such as lead and mercury, which can seap into ground water, if the sets are thrown into land fills.
Washington is also instituting a recycling program on January 1, as a result of a law passed on 2006. Read Assoicated Press coverage below.
