A new Congressional caucus will focus on increasing energy efficiency
and lowering the carbon footprint of buildings, according to a report
on Politico.com.
The newly formed High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus
will be co-charied by Representativess Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) and Judy
Biggert (R-Ill.), and could play a significant role in crafting
legislation for an economic stimulus or climate change bill.
President-elect Barack Obama has said building efficiency and
home weatherization will be a key part of his green legislative
program.
The House group is reportedly recruiting Republicans and incoming freshmen on the Energy and Commerce Committee.
The green buildings issue will likely be one of the easiest energy-related ideas to move through Congress next year.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report
last weekend to delegates at the climate change talks in Poland,
outlining the huge, untapped potential of the building and construction
sector for combating climate change.
