CA Approves Sweeping Climate Change Plan

California officials yesterday approved a climate plan that aims to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by 2020.

Central to the plan is a cap-and-trade program and a requirement for utilities to produce a third of their energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and geothermal.

The plan also calls for the expansion of existing energy efficiency programs and building and appliance standards, as well as improvements to the way communities are built to make more livable, walkable cities, and shorten commutes.

"Today is the day we help unleash the full force of California’s innovation and technology for a healthier planet, a stronger and more robust economy and a safer and more secure energy future," Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement released after the California Air Resources Board voted to approve the plan.
