Make-A-Wish Recipient Chooses Renewable Energy

A 13-year-old boy who is battling leukemia told the Make-A-Wish Foundation that the one thing he wanted above all else was to meet with researchers developing cuting-edge renewable energy technologies.

David, from the San Francisco Bay Area, is now on a year-long environmental sojourn, sharing his tremendous enthusiasm for clean technology with top minds in the field.

His first stop was at the offices of greentech venture capitalists Kleiner Perkins and Caufield, where he presented a portfolio of his own ideas and research to several of the firms partners who said they were geniunely impressed with David’s knowledge.

John Doerr a well-known partner in the firm, spent two hours with David, and offered him the opportunity to join the "Inconvenient Youth" group being trained to present former vice president Al Gore’s well-documented slide show.

During the visit, David said, "This is exactly what I hoped for–this is perfect!"

In August David visited the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he met with Felix Kramer, founder of the California Cars Initiative, Nobel laureate Steve Chu and others.

Since then, David has discussed renewable energy with NASA researchers and visited the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado.

"It was gratifying to see everyone so curious about David and his projects," said Patricia Wilson, Executive Director of Make-A-Wish. "Probably the best advice he got was from KR Sridhar (CEO, Bloom Energy) who said, ‘From one inventor to another, never accept an answer if you believe something different. Go in search of the truth.’"
