Acciona To Complete U.S. Wind Farms By Year End

Spanish wind company Acciona Energy (Nasdaq: ANA) said by the end of the year it will complete the installation of two wind farms in the United States with a total capacity of 223.5 megawatts (MW), representing an investment of around $495 million.

The parks at Red Hills (123 MW) in Oklahoma and EcoGrove I (100.5 MW) in Illinois, both 100% owned by Acciona, will jointly produce clean energy equivalent to the consumption of around 65,000 US homes.

The Red Hills facility is located in Roger Mills and Custer counties in western Oklahoma, where Acciona already participates in the Blue Canyon wind park (74.5 MW).

The project represents an investment of around $267 million and consists of 82 AW-1500 wind turbines of Acciona Windpower technology, each turbine having a capacity of 1.5 MW.

The EcoGrove I wind park is situated in Stephenson County, Illinois. With an approximate investment of 228 million dollars (168 million euros), it will have 67 AW-1500 wind turbines.

EcoGrove I will be the first wind park to be built from the project portfolio that Acciona acquired from EcoEnergy last year in order to develop 1,300 MW in the states of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

In both cases, a large number of the wind turbines will be supplied from the new plant that Acciona Windpower (the group company dedicated to the design and manufacture of wind turbines) has set up in the state of Iowa.

The construction of these wind frams will strengthen the presence of Acciona in North America (USA and Canada), one of the strategic markets for the Group. It already has six operational wind farms there with a total capacity of 402 MW.

Three of these wind parks are located in the USA. Two of them are wholly owned–Tatanka (180 MW), the biggest installed by Acciona in the world, and Velva (11.88 MW)–and a third park -Blue Canyon (74.25 MW)–with a minority participation. The total capacity is therefore 266.13 MW, with attributable capacity to the company of 191.88 MW. With Red Hills and EcoGrove the figure of 489.63 MW will be reached in the country.

In Canada, Acciona Energy has another three wind parks in service–Magrath and Chin Chute (both of 30 MW, with a 33.3% share) and Ripley (76 MW, with a 50% share), totaling 136 MW.
