Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate has made environmentalists even more reluctant to vote Republican–if that’s possible.
In the 20 months that she has been governor of the state, she has argued against listing the polar bear as a threatened species, she has questioned the conclusion that beluga whales need protection of the coast of Alaska, she has defended the right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters, and she has said she is not convinced that global warming is the result of human activity.
Op-ed columnist Thomas L.Friedman said that with the choice of Palin, "John McCain has completed his makeover from the greenest Republican to run for president to just another representative of big oil."
John Toppenberg, director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance. saod "Her philosophy from our perspective is cut, kill, dig and drill." He added that she is "in the Stone Age of wildlife management and is very opposed to utilizing accepted science."
