Japanese electronics company Sanyo Electric Co Ltd (6764.T) announced today that it intends to raise its solar cell output to 4 gigawatts (GW) a year by 2020–a tenfold incrase from current production levels, according to a Reuters report.
If achieved, the increase would account for roughly 10% of the global market. The company had a 4.4% share of the market in 2007.
Sanyo had a capacity level of 260 megawatts of solar cells for the year ending in March.
The company announced earlier in the year a plan to invest $739 million over three years in its solar cell business to increase output to 650 megawatts per year.
