The U.S. railroad industry is promoting itself as a greener and cheaper alternative to shipping goods by truck.
Large shipping companies like JB Hunt are switching more containers to trains from trucks to save on fuel prices as the cost of diesel has gone through the roof in recent months.
In addition, train transportation allows companies who are actively trying to shrink their cabon footprints, like Dell Inc. (Nasdaq: Dell) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), to significantly reduce the emissions associated with their products.
The Union of Concerned Scientists said railroads can play a big part in reducing highway congestion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
