Nissan Motor Co. (Nasdaq: NSANY) has developed an accelerator pedal that pushes back on a driver’s foot, when it senses overacceleration resulting in poor fuel economy.
The so-called "ECO pedal" can be turned on or off by the driver. The carmaker said it will be included in certain vehicles beginning next year. It did not say which models would be equipped with the new feature.
Nissan said the system, which also includes real-time fuel consumption statistics on the instrument panel, could improve fuel efficiency by 5-10% depending on driving conditions.
The Japanese automaker recently announced a cooperative plan to test electric vehicles in Tennessee.
