For years environmentally conscious shoppers have bemoaned the the increased use of plastic packaging for everything from frozen foods and fresh produce to CD cases and AA batteries.
It seems as though the promise of biodegradable plastics remains ever on the horizon without moving any closer. But that may be changing.
BusinessWeek takes a close look at biotech company Metabolix (Nasdaq: MBLX) and its competitors Dupont (NYSE: DD), Braskem (NYSE: BAK), Novomer and Cereplast (CERP.OB), all of whom are trying to be the first to successfully commercialize a bio-based alternative to the plastics that will remain in landfills for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
