More Batteries Needed for Hybrid Vehicles

Following what one Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) executive called a "watershed month," automakers are doing all they can to bring smaller, fuel efficient vehicles to market, to make up for steep declines in the sales of gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs.

Hybrid vehicles, which conserve gas by running part-time on electric motors, are in hot demand, beginning to outsell some of the standard options for popular vehicles like the Toyota Camry.

But hybrid production lines are not operating at full capacity due to a shortage of nickel-metal-hydride batteries used to power the electric drive trains. And the demand for batteries continues to grow.
