GreenHunter Energy Opens Largest Biodiesel Rifinery

GreenHunter Energy, Inc. (AMEX: GRH) has begun operations at its new biodiesel refinery located in Houston, Texas.

The facility has a capacity of 105 million gallons per year (mgpy) and is the largest in the U.S.

The second largest facility is owned by Imperium Renewables in Washington State, with a 100-mgpy capacity.

U.S. production capacity for biodiesel reached 2,240 mgpy in 2007, although poor market conditions held 2007 production to about 450 million gallons, according to the National Biodiesel Board (NBB).

GreenHunter said its refinery is "feedstock agnostic", meaning that it can use 100% animal fats, 100% vegetable oils, or any blend of the two interchangeably. The finished product is of the highest quality biodiesel, more commonly known as "water-white" biodiesel.

The refinery is located on GreenHunter Energy’s Renewable Fuels Campus, which also includes a 700,000 barrel bulk liquid terminal operation, a 200 million pound per year glycerin distillation system and a 45,000 barrel-per-month methanol distillation tower.

In other biodiesel news, Renewable Energy Group signed an agreement to purchase U.S. Biodiesel Group, and it’s 35 mgpy refinery in Houston for approximately $80 million.
