Advantage Rent A Car said this week it intends to become the first major rental car agency to have all ‘green’ vehicles.
Denny Hecker, Chairman of Advantage Rent A Car announced Tuesday at the American Car Rental Show in Las Vegas that his company would turn 100% of its fleet "green" over the next 24 months subject to manufacturers’ assistance and vehicle availability.
"Our single ownership and nimble fleet size provide us the ability to make a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint in the United States," Hecker said.
Frank Dankovich, the company’s VP of Fleet Operations, said, "Advantage has always had flexibility in purchasing fleet allocation from Toyota, Hyundai, Suzuki, GM and Chrysler. This new green operating commitment will challenge us to be creative with our future fleet purchases, but now more than ever each OEM has enough product that taken together we will be able to offer any vehicle from a Toyota Prius to a Chevy Tahoe hybrid."
The company’s press release did not say specifically whether this "all green" commitment will be entirely hybrid vehicles, or whether some of the green fleet could be flex fuel vehicles, capable of running on E85 ethanol blend. The US Postal Service released statistics this week showing that the introduction of flex fuel vehicles actually decreased fuel efficiency across its fleet.
Advantage Rent A Car has 100 U.S. locations and 36 affiliates internationally. Currently the company’s website does not highlight the availability of any hybrid vehicles for rent.
