The Challenge of a Million Trees

Arbor Day has gained a bit more attention in recent years as cities and states across the country have initiated tree-planting programs to combat global warming.

Los Angeles, New York City, Salt Lake City, Nebraska and New Mexico are all aiming to add one million trees over the next decade and cities like Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis and Washington have less ambitious programs underway.

Shade is the primary benefit of increased forest canopies in urban areas. The cooling effect means air conditioners do not have to work as hard to cool buildings, thus saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

However, finding suitable ground to plant the trees in is proving to be more difficult than expected, according to a Washington Post report.
