The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has signed a deal with Woodside Homes to build 1,487 solar homes in subdivisions near Rancho Cordova, California.
SMUD will provide about $6,000 worth of incentives for solar-power roof tiles and rebates for energy efficiency equipment in each of the homes–about $8.9 million in all.
Part of SMUD’s SolarSmart program, the homes are expected to be completed in 2012 and save residents as much as 60% annually on their electric bills.
The deal with Woodside Homes is the tenth, and largest, signed since last year under the SolarSmart program, which is now responsible for 4,000 new homes.
In addition to solar power, energy saving measures in these homes include efficient heating and air conditioning systems, radiant heat barriers in attics, added insulation, sealed ducts and compact fluorescent lighting.
