West Coast fisheries managers voted to cancel all commercial salmon fishing this year off the coasts of California and Oregon, the AP reported.
In an effort to save dwindling populations of wild salmon in the region, the Pacific Fishery Management Council will allow only limited recreational fishing on holiday weekends in Oregon waters.
The governors of Washington, Oregon and California have already signed letters seeking disaster declaration to help the hard-hit fishing industry.
Researchers are focusing on the collapse of the Sacramento River chinook population, which was once one of the strongest runs of salmon on the west coast.
