New York City is issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to develop solar systems on the roofs of city-owned buildings in all five boroughs.
As part of his PlaNYC initiative, mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced that the City Department of Administrative Services (CDAS) would issue the RFP for private solar developers to install, own and maintain solar panels at 11 potential sites, including five schools and a community college.
The City has offered to enter into a 20-year power purchase agreement with developers to buy the electricity produced by the systems, which would effectively double the city’s solar electric capacity to a total of 4 megawatts.
"We’ve set a target of shrinking our carbon footprint by 30% by the year 2030. Increasing the use of renewable energy, like solar power, is a key strategy in that effort." Mayor Bloomberg said. "Using solar power decreases demand for electricity from the power grid, which is typically generated by burning the fossil fuels that contribute to climate change."
Last month, Southern California Edison announced plans to install 250 megawatts of solar panels on 65 million square feet commercial rooftops.
