Last week the City of Los Angeles passed a new ordinance requiring large commercial and residential developments to employ green building standards like low-flow toilets, paints with low emissions, use of recycled materials, solar panels and natural light.
In doing so the city joins of group of 13 other cities and one state–Connecticut–in requiring private developers to meet environmentally friendly building standards.
Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the ordinance last week on Earth Day and pledged to reduce the city’s carbon emissions 35% below 1990 levels by 2030.
About 150 new and renovated buildings will be covered by the new ordinance each year, accounting for roughly 7.5 million square feet, according to city officials.
Last week, Los Angeles also receive $213 million in federal transportation funding to convert lanes on some of its busiest expressways into congestion-priced toll lanes.
