Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq GS: SBUX) is the most recent Fortune 500 company to embrace the idea of "Ecosystem Services," according to a new report in Fortune.
"Ecosystem Services" refers to the valuable services and products, such as clean water, timber and carbon sequestering, provided by the environment. It’s an idea that is taking hold, as businesses and governments are beginning to integrate environmental costs into more sustainable economic models.
Starbucks will finance Conservation International’s efforts to work with with coffee growers and local communities in developing nations to protect the landscapes around coffee growing areas.
In doing so, these farmers an communities can become eligible to sell credits in the burgeoning $70 billion carbon finance business.
