Two different experimental processes–one in Norway and one in the Netherlands–are capitalizing on the energy released when massive amounts of salt and fresh water meet, such as happens in estuaries around the world where rivers meet the ocean.
Both systems use membranes created by companies like GE (NYSE: GE), Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW), Hydranautics or Japan’s Toray Industries (TOR1.DE) to capture the power–though in two different ways.
The Norwegian process utilizes the hydrokinetic strength of mass osmosis–equivalent to a 270-meter waterfall. The Dutch process collects the electrical currents given off by the exchange.
