Plans announced for Largest Wind Farm in China

China’s Huaneng Group, the parent company of Huaneng International Power Inc. (NYSE: HNP) will begin building the nation’s largest wind farm in June, according to the Chinese newspaper, China Economic Herald.

Reuters cited the paper as saying the project would create a 300 megawatts (MW) wind farm with 200 turbines in Fuxin city of northeast Liaoning province.

According to the report, the wind farm should be operational by the end of the year, producing 600 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 400 million yuan (US$57 million) worth of revenue each year.

China announced plans earlier this month to raise its target wind power capacity for 2010 from 5 gigawatts (GW) to 10 GW.

The country currently produces 80% of its energy from coal, according to the Reuters report, and the 4.03 GW of wind power currently installed in China accounts for only 0.6% of the nation’s generating capacity.

Huaneng International Power is the largest electricity producer in China.
