New Certification for 'Public Benefit' Companies

A new third-party certification, called "B Corporations," is being issued for companies that not only supply sustainable products or services, but also "create a public benefit" as an integral part of their business plans.

So far, more than 80 privately owned companies have been certified by the non-profit B Labs, based in Berwyn, PA, including Dansko, King Arthur Flour Company, Seventh Generation and method.

B Corporations are relatively evenly distributed along the spectrum from near-term public market businesses with $100 million or more in revenues to medium-size growth companies with $10-100 million in revenues to small businesses, local businesses, and sole proprietorships with less than $5 million in revenues.
