Nationals Open First Green-Built Ballpark

President Bush threw out the opening pitch and the Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves to open the nation’s first green-built baseball stadium on Sunday, in Washington D.C.

The brand-new 41,000-plus seat Nationals Park received a Silver rating by the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The ballpark features environmentally-friendly attributes, including high efficiency lighting, low emission finishes, recycled materials and low-flow plumbing fixtures.

It also features a 6,300-square-feet green roof covered with plants on a concession area, designed to absorb rainwater and reduce runoff into the nearby Anacostia River.

The stadium also has a groundwater and stormwater filtration system to help protect the River.

Nationals Park was built by Clark/Hunt/Smoot, a joint venture composed of Clark Construction Group, LLC of Bethesda, Maryland; Hunt Construction Group of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Smoot Construction Company of Washington, DC. The combined portfolio of these three firms includes the construction of 11 of the past 16 Major League Baseball stadiums built in the United States.
