FPL Energy, LLC, the leading generator of wind and solar thermal power in the U.S. and subsidiary of the FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL), announced plans to build and operate a 250-megawatt solar thermal plant in the Mojave Desert to be called the Beacon Solar Energy Project.
FPL Energy has been operating similar technology at its SEGS solar thermal facilities in the Mojave Desert for close to 20 years, according to a release.
The plant will be located on a 2,000 acre site in Kern County, California. Construction on the plant is expected to begin in late 2009 and will take two years to complete.
The plant will generate enough electricity to power about 175,000 homes.
