German renewable energy company EnviTec Biogas AG (ETG.F) has been awarded its first contract in India via a joint venture in that country.

The state-owned energy utility PEDA (Punjab Energy Development Agency) has placed an order with the consortium "Green Planet Energy Pvt. Ltd", in which EnviTec is a 50% partner. PEDA has contracted for biogas facilities with an electricity output of 30 megawatts (MW) in Punjab, the country’s largest industrial state.

EnviTec Biogas India Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore will build 30 one-megawatt biogas plants across Punjab over the next two years. According to a release, the entire contract is worth more than  EUR 30 million, and work on the first few plants is to commence in March of this year.

"This contract marks a milestone in our internationalization strategy," explains Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas AG. "India has gigantic energy requirements as one out of two households in rural regions does not have any electricity. With biogas plants as a non-centralized source of energy, we are able to make a real difference."
