China intends to produce 10% of its energy from renewable sources by 2010, according to the country’s newly released renewable energy development plan for 2006-2010.
The plan was released Tuesday by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country’s top economic planning agency.
It calls for doubling renewable energy from 2005 levels, an equivalent of 300 million tons of standard coal.
Given the dearth of petroleum and natural gas resources and the large share of coal in China’s energy production, it is difficult for the nation to sustain its development and protect the environment by relying simply on fossil fuels.
By 2010, the plan says the following sources will be used:
- Hydro power – 190,000 megawatts (MW)
- Wind power – 10,000 MW
- Bio-energy – 5,500 MW
- Solar power – 300 MW
