International retailer Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) will break ground today on its first green store, located in Austin Texas.
The store, which is expected to be completed this summer, will be one of the first registered projects to certify within USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Volume Certification Program.
The USGBC pilot program is designed to help retail chains achieve LEED-Certification at numerous locations and to facilitate the certification process for a company’s prototype.
Office Depot said it chose Austin for its first green store partly because of Mayor Will Wynn’s Austin Climate Protection Plan, which is aimed at reducing the city’s greenhouse gas emissions and making all city facilities, fleets and operations carbon-neutral by 2020.
The new Green store will integrate many green building design elements, including energy and waste reduction, water conservation, green products and green services.
Office Depot’s partner on the project is SBLM Architects PC.
