Intel topped the list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens released this week by CRO Magazine.
The list ranks the corporate responsibility initiatives of U.S.-based, large-cap companies on the Russell 1000 index. Corporations are scored in eight areas: climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights, lobbying and philanthropy.
Intel ranked in the top 100 in five of the eight categories, earning its highest mark in the environment category, which measured environmental disclosures, policies and performance.
In the nine years that 100 Best has been tabulated, just three companies–Intel, Cisco (No. 14) and Starbucks (No. 35)–have appeared on the list each year.
Surprisingly the utilities industry, frequently under fire for its massive carbon footprint and other environmental missteps, was the most heavily represented sector in the list, with 19 corporations, from PG&E (No. 10) to El Paso (No. 87), among the listees.
This is the first year the the listing has focused exclusively on large-cap companies, meaning that 23 companies on the 100 Best 2007 list, including Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (No. 1 in 2007), weren’t under consideration for the 2008 rankings.
In addition, eight companies–Bristol-Myers Squibb, Chevron, Eli Lilly, ExxonMobil, Hewlett-Packard, Mattel, Merck, and Travelers Companies–were excluded from the 2008 list because of alleged transgressions that ranged from suppression of information about product risks to accounting scandals
