Fourteen of California’s most prominent companies, including Apple, Google, Patagonia and Wal-Mart, today announced a partnership aimed at sharing best practices for purchasing and developing new sources of renewable energy.
The Green Power Group–California Affiliates, whose goal is bring corporate renewable energy purchasing to significant scale in California, is the third such commercial and industrial partnership convened by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The first two partnerships, the U.S. Green Power Market Development Group and the European Green Power Market Development Group, have facilitated the development of over 600 megawatts of renewable energy through on-site projects and green power purchases.
The other companies in the Green Power Group are: Advanced Micro Devices, BT Americas, Cisco Systems, eBay, Hewlett-Packard, Intel Corporation, Intuit, Levi Strauss & Co., News Corporation, Pactiv Corporation.
Alexander Perera, director of WRI’s Green Power Market Development Group, said the partnership will help the companies meet environmental goals, reduce exposure to volatile electricity prices, and support new clean technologies.
"The commercial and industrial sectors can play a critical role in supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies," Perera said. "By working together, these companies hope to see improved green-power purchasing opportunities in the state."
